Professor Michael Seeger, together with a team of USM researchers also composed of Erwin Strahsburger, Myriam Gonz\u00e1lez and Franco C\u00e1rdenas, are developing research to extract compounds from the black sea urchin for pharmacological purposes, in the treatment of heart disease and eye diseases. The black urchin is considered a pest by fishermen, but for medical purposes it has antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. The study uses the urchins’ eggs, which makes it possible to keep them alive and even think about their cultivation, which would allow advancing to other applications, since their compound can also be used in aquaculture and livestock farming.
