A -according to the government of the Canadian province of Alberta- is “an abandoned, vacant, derelict or underutilized property which, because of its former use, is or is perceived to be contaminated, but which also has potential for the productivity of the area and the community, including its rehabilitation and reuse”. The amount of has been continuously increasing worldwide, mainly due to the growth of cities, which has caused industrial areas that were previously on the outskirts to become immersed in urban centers, and also by virtue of changes of use in regulatory plans. To prevent these former industrial areas from becoming black spots and crime hotspots for the city, all necessary measures must be taken to overcome any contamination issues and, through redevelopment, exploit their full potential. The redevelopment process has multiple advantages, among which are that properties and land cease to look abandoned and neglected, low-flow or dark areas that can be crime hotspots are avoided, and pollution and filth hotspots are eliminated.
