Professor Luis Alvarez: current rainfall does not solve drought

Publications and media

In an article published by La Estrella de Valparsíso, PUCV geographer Luis Álvarez, analyzes the situation regarding the rainfall recorded in recent weeks in the country. With an eye to the future, he clarifies that we should not think that the drought situation has been overcome thanks to the recent rains, but that we should continue to be attentive. Luis Álvarez, professor of Geography PUCV and Master in Urbanism, specifies that a normal year should be above 440 millimeters and we are just close to 200. The last bad weather fronts that have been registered in the area have returned optimism and with it the temptation to think that the drought that has affected the area is beginning to dissipate. For this reason, the voice of the experts who have studied the behavior of rainfall for years is fundamental to not lower our guard and to keep our attention on how this “rainy winter” can be capitalized but not seen as the solution to our problems.
