Soil: a non-renewable resource

Publications and media

In an article published in the Anniversary Edition of El Mercurio de Valparaíso, Las Salinas addressed the importance of soil as a resource to sustain life on the planet, as important as water and air. We invite you to read the complete publication in this post. Few people know that soils are a non-renewable resource. It takes more than a thousand years for a centimeter of soil to form. However, healthy soil is diminishing at an alarming rate, also in Chile. In our country there are around 600 environmental liabilities in urban environments that can be recovered, and Las Salinas is working on one of them. The Las Salinas area, located in the center of Viña del Mar, with an industrial past, urgently requires remediation to reintegrate this land into the urban fabric, allowing the creation of a high standard neighborhood that contributes to a better city. And the best technique, according to experts in Chile and the world, is bioremediation. “Bioremediation is the technique that will achieve the most effective and sustainable soil recovery, since it is a technology that takes advantage of the natural processes that are occurring in the environment. It is the only one that allows us to take charge of the contamination because it degrades it instead of transferring it,” says Stephanie Rotella, Environmental Development Coordinator at Las Salinas. Soil can mitigate climate change, as long as it is healthy. Therefore, investing in sustainable soil management makes economic, social and environmental sense.
