We are inspired to generate a new, inclusive space designed for people, helping Viña del Mar recover its friendly and inclusive identity.
The area where the Las Salinas property is located is deeply linked to the industrial vocation that dates back to the origins of Viña del Mar
The early development of the area shaped its geography, defining the characteristics of its landscape and even altering its morphology. The name “Las Salinas” recalls its natural condition as a coastal lagoon— a low-lying area that collects saline waters, which were traditionally harvested by hand during the summer months. This natural resource gave rise to the site’s earliest vocation.
At the end of the 19th century, a project was promoted to extract salt on an industrial scale; however, it did not succeed due to seasonal irregularities and the availability of the resource from northern Chile, shipped through the port of Valparaíso. Subsequently, a brick factory was established on the site, connected by a railway through a tunnel known as 16 Norte, which allowed the material to be transported and supplied to masonry works for bridges, coastal defenses, and railway infrastructure. This development transformed the area into the city’s most significant industrial sector, completing the industrialization of Valparaíso Bay from Punta Ángeles to Punta Ossa.
From the early 20th century onward, these lands hosted activities from a range of sectors, including railway operations, manufacturing, and metalworking, among others. One of the most significant was the use of the site’s rock formation as a quarry, from which most of the material required for the construction of the Valparaíso port breakwater was extracted. This major infrastructure project was carried out by the British firm Pearson & Sons between 1912 and 1924 and is considered one of the most remarkable engineering works in the country during the first half of the 20th century. The extraction process created a large quarry, which today forms the slope of Las Salinas.
Beginning in 1915, the first operations on the site were established by Shell and Esso, collectively known as “the oil companies.” In 1930, Copec set up operations, and by 1957 Mobil granted Copec exclusive representation in Chile, leading to the construction of a lubricant production plant— a key hub of industrial activity for both the Valparaíso Region and the country as a whole. The first fuel stations for Copec and Shell were also built for retail fuel distribution. Over time, the National Pipeline Company (SONACOL) joined the area, operating an interconnected pipeline distribution system linked to refineries, supplying part of the energy demand of Chile’s central region.
Over time, the area’s industrial profile began to be accompanied—and gradually surrounded—by activities linked to the environmental and scenic value of the coastline, as beaches were adapted for recreational use. This process began in 1920 with the construction of the former Recreo seaside resort.
By 1960, Viña del Mar had consolidated its identity as a tourist city, prompting population expansion toward Reñaca. The cessation of operations of “the oil companies” in 2003 marked the end of this industrial era and the beginning of a transition process that would ultimately lead to the site’s full urban integration into the city.
