Vegetal Laboratory

We promote the use of vegetation floors characteristic of the V Region in urban public spaces.

Incorporating native flora into the city’s urban landscape has multiple benefits. While introduced species have requirements that are not necessarily provided by their adopted habitat, such as large quantities of water, native flora is adapted to its place of origin, which allows for the optimization of water resources. In addition, it attracts local fauna, especially pollinating insects and birds, playing an essential role in the maintenance of a large part of the plant kingdom.

Each m2 of grass consumes 63 liters of water per week, while our native flora consumes 3.2 liters of water per week.

What species can you find in the Plant Laboratory?

In an area of 1300 mts2, located in Las Salinas, we studied the properties and requirements of 25 plant species that coexist among them and are part of the coastal Mediterranean sclerophyllous shrubland, one of the 17 vegetational floors known in the region of Valparaíso.

In total, the Plant Laboratory is made up of 100% native species, of which approximately 60% are endemic.
